CBE+ HELPS SHU RACE TEAM STEER THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS

OUR PRECISION ENGINEERS HAVE ONCE AGAIN BEEN IN THE DRIVING SEAT AS THEY SUPPORTED SHU (SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY) FORMULA STUDENT RACING TEAM TO BUILD THE 2019 RACE CAR.

For the second year running as a Silver Sponsor, we have worked with SHU Racing to manufacture quality machined race car components. Our engineers also assisted the team during the development of the vehicle’s design.

Chris Hey, Production Engineer at CBE+, comments: “Working with SHU Racing is always one of the highlights of the year. There is a real need to bridge the skills gap within our industry, so it is always great to be able to share our expertise with the SHU race team. As well as being given an insight into the real world of engineering, each student gains valuable experience that will give them a head start when they begin their future careers.”

Formula Student, run by IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers), is an educational engineering competition backed by industry and high-profile engineers, which aims to
develop enterprising and innovative engineers and encourage more young individuals to take up a career in engineering. 2019 is the seventh consecutive year that Sheffield Hallam University has been involved in the competition, which was held during the summer.

Chris Hey adds: “We would like to extend our congratulations to SHU Racing. The students manufactured a car that performed so well, the team secured its highest ever finish in its seven year history, placing 21st out of 81. Well done to all involved.”

Formula Student is designed to provide an ideal opportunity for the team members to test, demonstrate and improve their capabilities to deliver a complex and integrated product in the demanding environment of a motorsport competition.

The task usually forms part of a degree-level project and is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from
university to the workplace. It is a kite-mark for real-world engineering experience, combining practical engineering experience with soft skills including business planning and project management.

Each year, Formula Student sees over 100 university teams from around the globe travel to Silverstone to compete in static and dynamic events that will test their preparation and hard work. For more information, visit imeche.org/events/formula-student.
