Chesterfield company CBE+ is supporting not one, but three high profile STEM initiatives this month, including two region-wide career fairs and a large-scale STEM project to encourage more young people in the region to pursue STEM careers.
The team from CBE+, who provide specialist engineering services in multiple sectors including the world’s most demanding, aerospace and oil and gas, will be attending ‘Get up to Speed’ which is organised by the Workwise Foundation and ‘Made Futures’, which is the first such event held by the Made Group. Both career fairs are taking place from 22 – 26 March.
Get up to Speed is the UK’s biggest interactive STEM and careers event, and for the 5th year running, CBE+ will be the headline sponsor.
This year, the extended, week-long event will be fully virtual, in line with COVID-19 health and safety regulations.
Get up to Speed – The Virtual Experience, will give young people the opportunity to learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and manufacturing) industries and the careers available within them.
Attendees will learn what it’s really like to work in the STEM sector, through virtual company tours, live exhibitor demonstrations, ‘ask the expert’ Q&As, competitions, presentations and panel discussions from businesses, inventors, apprentices, and education providers within the industry.
Launching at the event is the Vulcan to the Sky education initiative. CBE+ are hosting this STEM project at their factory, in partnership with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust and The Work-wise Foundation. CBE+ are currently housing an original fuel tank (as used in the conversion of Vulcan to a tanker) and two spare original Delta Wing Tips, which form the stock of parts used to maintain the iconic, British-engineered Vulcan XH558, which is owned by the Trust and will be restored and display in The Vulcan Experience.
Over the past ten years, Get up to Speed has attracted over 12,500 attendees, around 80% of whom were young people, families and teachers, and hundreds of companies from across Yorkshire. These have included McLaren Automotive, Firth Rixson, Liberty Speciality Steel, Tinsley Bridge, Newburgh Precision, AESSEAL, Rolls Royce and Mazak.
Made Futures runs the same week as Get up to Speed and takes the format of a virtual exhibition hall in which young people and job seekers can view the roles available within various businesses and learn more about manufacturers across the region. The week includes live events via Zoom, masterclasses and ‘meet the maker’ sessions. The event aims to generate 1000s of jobs in the region.
