Nearly 600 students from 44 schools across Yorkshire gathered for the fifth annual North Star Science School to explore the exciting possibilities of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).

The one-day event at Gulliver’s Valley Resort, Rotherham, is designed to ignite curiosity and inspire the next generation of STEAM professionals. It featured interactive workshops, experiments, and motivational talks from notable figures. Leading the line-up was acclaimed physicist and Britain’s leading science broadcaster, Professor Brian Cox CBE FRS, whose keynote speech and Live Q&A captivated the students and encouraged them to consider futures in STEAM fields.

Chesterfield-based CBE+, a UK leader in Electroless Nickel Plating, and a key sponsor of the event, engaged students with its hands-on ‘Crazy Planes!’ challenge. Students were tasked with making various designs of paper aeroplanes and using both kinetic and mortised launchers to fly the planes at superhero themed targets. The aim was to work out the best combination and in turn, score the most points.

Organised by The Work-wise Foundation, an employer-led charity, in collaboration with Well North Enterprises, the event also included insightful talks from social entrepreneur, Lord Andrew Mawson OBE; award-winning British inventor, Ruth Amos; Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Sheffield, Dr Simon Goodwin, and highly accomplished Clinical Audiologist and Hearing Aid Dispenser, Sonia Jones.

Marie Cooper, CEO of CBE+ and a trustee of The Work-wise Foundation, said: “We’re passionate about nurturing the next generation of talent and inspiring young minds to explore careers in STEAM. Events like the North Star Science School are vital for unlocking potential, sparking curiosity, and opening doors to a world of opportunities for students in our region.

“By bringing together partners to showcase the cutting edge of science and engineering, we’re helping to promote innovation and create a future where Yorkshire thrives as a hub of creativity and opportunity.”
